(Image: Submitted)An outstanding 40 secondary students proved they could handle the heat in the inaugural Fire Service Youth Academy, a new program designed to inspire the next generation of fire service leaders.

Run by Career Education in partnership with , the program is a unique opportunity for Grade 11 and 12 students to engage with experienced fire service professionals and gain invaluable insights into the vital role firefighters play in our communities, while instilling a deep appreciation for the dedication and bravery of firefighters.

Students spent three days at Surrey Fire’s Central Training Facility receiving hands-on training and developing practical skills demonstrating their strength, endurance and teamwork abilities.

“We are thrilled to see such a high level of interest and commitment from our youth,” said Career Education coordinator Georgina Hopps. “This academy is an excellent platform for young individuals to explore a career in fire services and understand the importance of community safety.”

The program identifies various career pathways available within the fire service, with seasoned firefighters sharing their experiences and offering guidance on pursuing careers in fire services.

Through a series of team-building exercises and emergency response simulations, students learned about fire safety, equipment usage, structural knowledge, chain of command and requirements for becoming a firefighter. New recruits must undergo fitness and educational training, including strength training, cardiovascular endurance and mobility, as well as fire-specific training such as ladder work, theoretical knowledge, safety protocols and hands-on training through performing simulated exercises.

As a testament to their dedication and hard work, four students were awarded scholarships worth $2,500 each. These scholarships aims to support their future educational endeavors and further their interest in fire services. This year’s winners are:

  • Lily Bey, Fraser Heights Secondary;
  • Kaelyn Chong, Grandview Heights Secondary
  • Kennedy Grayson, École Salish Secondary; and
  • Kyle Pamintuan, Clayton Heights Secondary.

Career Education extends its gratitude to all the participants, instructors and volunteers who contributed to the success of this year’s academy. We look forward to continuing this tradition and inspiring more young individuals to join the ranks of our dedicated fire service professionals.
